What is depth in image processing ?

Depth or color depth or bit depth is either the number of bits used to indicate the color of a single pixel or number of bits used to indicate each color component in a single pixel.

When referring to the first concept then we use the term bpp – bits per pixel and in another one we use the terms like bpc – bits per channel or bpc – bits per color or bps – bits per sample

Color depth can be :

1-bit monochrome = 2^1 = 2 colors

2-bit = 2^2 = 4 colors

8-bit grayscale = 2^8 = 256 gray

8-bit color = 256 colors

24- bit = 2^24 colors = true color
